*Interview* with author Kacey Shea

Author Interview with Kacey Shea

1. What are you working on right now? I’m currently finishing up my first draft of my fourth novel, Caught in the Flames, which is a standalone. It’s a not-your-typical firefighter romance and follows Callie Gordon, a twenty-two year old recent college grad as she navigates love, life, and friendship as an adult in Richmond, Virginia. Oh, and she’s a bit obsessed with firemen.
2. Tell us about your writing process. I’m always thinking about writing, and my day is full of mom duties, driving so and so to here or there, and for the next few weeks still working, so my writing time is precious. Often I’m jotting down notes throughout the day, making voice to text messages on my phone, or even typing on my laptop while I wait in the school pick up line. If I can’t write when inspiration hits, I make a note so I won’t forget later. I love to write with music and I have playlists for each of my projects. Several days a week you can find me holding down a booth in a café not far from my house, the busy atmosphere and endless iced tea refills keep me motivated and my three year old will color and watch shows on the iPad while I work. A few nights a week (okay more than half) I stay up way past midnight, while everyone else in the house is sleeping, so I can get uninterrupted time in.
3. Who was your favorite character to write? Who was the hardest to write? I really enjoyed writing Jon. I wrote from his POV for two books and there was something great about writing a man’s man, ex-military, and a little flawed. I love writing from a man’s POV and it’s something I’m told I do well. Men are just so honest, direct, sexual, and to the point with their thought processes even if their actions don’t always follow along. Most difficult to write? Probably the book I’m working on now - Callie. This project is outside my comfort zone, and I’m working to stretch and grow as a writer. My Uncovering Love series books are each told in dual POV, but with this book, it’s only Callie’s POV. It’s a challenge, a deeper and longer story, but I’m sort of strange in that I thrive off of a good challenge. I want to continue to hone my craft as a writer and storyteller, so I like the feeling of being pushed to do something I haven’t before.
4. Do you write full-time or do you have another job? I’m a mom of three, and I’m currently making the transition from part time bookkeeper so I can continue to stay at home with my kids and pursue writing as a career. In two weeks I’ll officially be a full time writer and I cannot wait! The past eighteen months I’ve been juggling, sacrificing sleep for writing, and although I’m sure I’ll still do that from time to time, I’m excited about the opportunity to be present as a mother, wife, and writer without the distraction of accounting principles and bank reconciliations!
5. What do you like to do in your spare time? Where can I get some of that? Haha. I enjoy traveling to new places, and I’m super excited to be signing at an author event in Sydney, Australia in 2017. But on the day to day scene I really love to read, meet friends or family for dinner, and every now and then spend a night out with my hubby at the movies.
6. Do you have any favorite TV shows? Modern Family is the only show I watch religiously, I used to watch more television but since I began writing I traded that time so spend with the characters in my head. When I do watch TV I enjoy a good drama with some action. I’m still upset Justified had to come to an end!
7. What's your guilty pleasure? Hmm… Reese’s peanut butter cups, singing and dancing along to boy bands (I blame this on N’Sync and Backstreet Boys), and a man in a firefighter gear.
8. Who are your favorite authors? I love Kristen Proby, Jay Crownover, Melanie Harlow, Christina Lauren, Kylie Scott, but I also love discovering new indie authors. I usually binge read in between writing projects and since I’m almost done with this current WIP, my TBR pile is massive! I can’t wait to get some uninterrupted reading time in this summer and just get lost in another person’s world.
9. If your books were made into movies, who would you cast to play your characters?
Well, since my cover model and friend Shane Williams is also an actor, he MUST play a major role in any books of mine that get optioned for movies. If and when that day ever comes he has first dibs and after that I’ll leave it to the casting director!
10. What was your last 5 star read? Off the top of my head I’ll say Wet by Ruth Clampett. It’s probably not the most recent, but it’s one that’s stuck with me. It had all the elements I love in a good romance: laugh out loud humor, all the feels, a story that wouldn’t let me put it down, and best of all, a happy ever after.
